A True Classic! FUSO Canter Celebrates 60 Years as The Pillar of the Transportation Industry
The first generation of the Mitsubishi FUSO Canter was released in Japan in 1963. The light truck was named “Canter” after the running gait of horses to symbolize its outstanding maneuverability and fuel economy. The T720 open-bed truck was introduced to the light truck market in 1963. Its design offered good all-around visibility and easy handling. Road construction and economic development led to the popularization of truck transport. The cab-over configuration of Canter gave it a tight turning radius suitable for many types of transportation scenarios and represented a major step forward for transportation efficiency in Japan. The third-generation Canter T200 series grew to 3 tonnes in weight and switched to a more powerful diesel engine. The significant boost to weight-carrying and speed was exactly what the transportation market was looking for. FUSO Canter’s weight-carrying continued to grow. An extended line-up ranging from 3.49 tonnes to 8.55 tonnes also provides customers with more options.

The first generation of the Canter for the Taiwanese market was launched in 1983. The Chinese name “Jian-Da” not only sounded similar to Canter but also conveyed to consumers its good quality, durability and reliability. The second generation of the domestically-produced Canter was released in 1996. Badging switched from CMC to Mitsubishi and it featured a CD player. Even today, the second-generation Canter can still be found hard at work; the third-generation Canter unveiled in 2007 featured more modern styling, a boost to the engine’s horsepower and torque output, and added a 14-foot flatbed. The 4th generation Canter released in 2013, introduced a next-generation diesel engine equipped with Duonic dual-clutch transmission for the first time. ABS, EBD and BOS became standard safety features as well.
Daimler Trucks Asia Taiwan Ltd. was founded in 2017 to provide consumers with more types of vehicles in order to meet the transportation needs of Taiwanese industries. In response to future energy trends, FUSO also launched FUSO eCanter, the brand’s first pure electric truck, in 2017. The eCanter not only demonstrated the brand’s advanced technology but also served as a pioneer for the electric truck market and transportation & logistics industry in order to realize the goal of carbon neutrality in the EU and other overseas markets. A new generation of the eCanter was unveiled in 2022 to showcase the latest advances in technology. “Canter” has long become synonymous with “commercial vehicles” in Taiwan. The trustworthy truck has won over the hearts of bosses and drivers, and has established itself as an irreplaceable benchmark in the commercial vehicle market.
